What
To Do Instead of Using Tobacco
|
|
Having
alternates is important to your quitting |
|
According
to this approach to tobacco cessation, a person needs
to have alternative things to do that are of equal or
greater value to what they get from using tobacco. For
example, if having something in my hands is an important
need, then finding alternatives that use my hands will
be important to help me succeed in quitting. Likewise,
if using a cigarette helps reduce my stress at work then
I might start walking during breaks instead. The list
of alternatives can be extensive. The focus should be
on alternatives that are safe, affordable, and legal.
|
| |
If
you are thinking about quitting, take a few minutes
and write down 10 things you can do instead of use
tobacco.
|
|
Keep
this list in a place you can get to easily when
you are craving tobacco. |
| |
Places
to put the list for easy access include: |
| |
Your back pocket |
| |
On the inside of your locker door |
| |
In your bedroom |
| |
In your car |
| |
With your dip tin or cigarette pack
|
|
When
you feel the urge to smoke or chew coming on, refer
to your list, pick one of your alternatives to do
instead. At
first this may seem hard to do but if you stick
with it, you will find it easier and easier to select
alternatives. |
