| Why
is a youth quitting program necessary? |
| In
Utah there are over 35,000 youth who currently use tobacco.
This represents approximately 11.9% of Utah's youth.
Based on a recent survey, the average age of tobacco
use initiation is 12 (Monitoring the Future, 2000).
Every day in the United States, more than 4,000 kids
under 18 try smoking for the first time, and another
2,000 kids who have already experimented with cigarettes
become new regular daily smokers. That’s more
than 750,000 new underage daily smokers each year. (Tobacco
Control Highlights, 2002) Overall, more than 80 percent
of all adult smokers first become regular smokers before
the age of 18 and almost 90 percent do so before leaving
their teens. (National Household Survey on Drug Abuse)
Like
most people who smoke, youth who smoke will need help
to quit. Surgeon General Antonio C. Novello said "Smoking
cessation represents the single most important step
smokers can take to enhance the length and quality of
their lives." We believe this is true for adults
and youth. Over 450,000 people die each year in the
United States from tobacco related illnesses. If a young
person can quit smoking they significantly reduce their
chances of suffering from a tobacco related illness.

| What
is END? |
END
is a tobacco cessation program designed especially for
teens. The program not only builds skills and knowledge
concerning tobacco use. It also focuses on developing
a wide variety of social skills, including communication,
stress management, decision making, goal setting, nutrition
and physical activity. The modules consist of techniques
to influence teen tobacco users’ knowledge, attitudes,
intentions, beliefs, self-awareness, and self-efficacy.
END is appropriate for implementation in schools, community
agencies, and juvenile court districts and is designed
for use with junior and senior high school smokers and
smokeless tobacco users.
