for Employees |
As
an employee of a retail outlet that sells tobacco, you
will be faced with the decision of what to do when an
underage person attempts to buy tobacco. Here are some
suggestions to help you prevent underage sales and
theft of tobacco:
Know
the law. It is illegal to sell tobacco to anyone under
age 19.
I.D.,
I.D., I.D. Develop the habit of requesting to see legitimate
picture forms of identification from anyone who appears
underage.
If
customers complain about your policy, explain that Utah
law prohibits the sale, possession, or use of tobacco
to anyone under the age of 19.
Talk
with your manager about who to refer angry customers to
so other customers in line aren’t inconvenienced.
Utah
law prohibits persons under age 19 from frequenting a
place of business while they are using tobacco. Talk
with your manager about what to do if you see this happening.
If
you're tempted to sell to friends or who are underage,
don't. Real friends should understand that your refusal
to sell to them is nothing personal, it's just the law.
Monitor
tobacco racks/displays in order to prevent theft. Talk
with your manager about the policy to be followed when
theft is suspected.
Don’t
jeopardize your job by being careless about underage tobacco
sales. If caught you may lose your job, establish a criminal
record, and pay a large fine. |
