Slipping, or relapse, is common. Most people will make 2-5 serious attempts to quit before he/she remains tobacco-free. Therefore, knowing what likely may cause one to slip as well as the process for overcoming those triggers is essential to tobacco cessation success.

Common Causes of Slips:
Social Celebrations Withdrawal Symptoms
Alcohol Consumption Weight Gain
Habit Triggers 
(e.g.- telephone calls,coffee, etc.)
Nicotine Dependency
Social Pressure Self Pity/Mourning
Negative Emotional State Expectation of Failure
Stressful Events 
(real or anticipated)
Craving for Tobacco
Inadequate Motivation to Quit Lack of a Quit Plan
   
How to Deal With Slips
Often, you can prevent slips by planning ahead. You can:

Write a list of people, places, things and situations that may cause you to  slip.

For each cause, list two new ways you will prevent yourself from slipping.

If you slip, don't give up - - try a new way to deal with the cause of your slip.

Give yourself credit for wanting to quit. Don't focus on the slips.

Seek help from family, friends, co-workers, and professional organizations.

Look at slips as an opportunity to change the response to your addiction.

Rewards include: self control, self-esteem, the knowledge that you accomplished something not everyone else would be able to, and many health benefits.
