Tips for Employees
As an employee of a retail outlet that sells tobacco, you will be faced with the decision of what to do when an underage person attempts to buy tobacco. Here are some suggestions to help you prevent underage sales and theft of tobacco:

Know the law. It is illegal to sell tobacco to anyone under age 19.

I.D., I.D., I.D. Develop the habit of requesting to see legitimate picture forms of identification from anyone who appears underage.

If customers complain about your policy, explain that Utah law prohibits the sale, possession, or use of tobacco to anyone under the age of 19.

Talk with your manager about who to refer angry customers to so other customers in line aren’t inconvenienced.

Utah law prohibits persons under age 19 from frequenting a place of business while they are using tobacco.  Talk with your manager about what to do if you see this happening.

If you're tempted to sell to friends or who are underage, don't. Real friends should understand that your refusal to sell to them is nothing personal, it's just the law.

Monitor tobacco racks/displays in order to prevent theft. Talk with your manager about the policy to be followed when theft is suspected.

Don’t jeopardize your job by being careless about underage tobacco sales. If caught you may lose your job, establish a criminal record, and pay a large fine.
